Reading Weeks

At Hoole St Michael we are a reading school and love to read. Every half term we spend a week as a whole school focusing and reading the same book. The books we choose reflect the values of our school, what is happening the world around us and that will inspire us.

The Nutcracker

We loved exploring The Nutcracker this year as part of our Christmas Reading week. Our Library was taken over by two giant Nutcrackers who guarded the magical door that had appeared there.

The Snow Queen

We loved exploring The Snow Queen at Hoole St Michael as part of our Christmas week. We began the week with Miss Topping’s worship showing us how the Christian Value of Friendship is particularly important at Christmas and is a huge theme in The Snow Queen. In classes we took part in lots of Snow Queen activities, we were treated to the pantomime of The Snow Queen and our entrance hall was turned into her ice palace!

The Journey

Autumn 1 ended with a Journey. Hoole St Michael explored this beautiful picture book by Aaron Becker.

The week began with the children coming to school as explorers, ready to set off on a journey. Each class then explored different sections of the book and discussed different themes with the children. Themes covered were; friendship, independence, exploration and our Christian value for the half term thankfulness.

The Grinch

What a week! Our Grinch Week began with our school being transformed into the streets of Whoville, decorated ready for Christmas. Each classroom had shape shifted into a building from the town where each class learnt about the story. EYFS were using they PSED and looking at the Grinch’s heart and how he made it grow, Atlantis and Endeavour were using the book as a basis for their Poetry writing and Enterprise were writing persuasive letters to the Grinch. We had a Fantastic week that was finished off with a visit from ‘The Grinch’.
